BU14 All Star Team wins Burlington Tournament

The Unionville-Milliken under-14 Strikers boys' all-star team did it again! Two for Two.

On their second soccer venture to Burlington, the team emerged with the tournament title after downing the Haldimand team 4-0 in the championship final.

The U-MSC Strikers’ team performed so well that they earned a berth in the final after winning the first three games.

U-MSC was forced to play a fourth game against Haldimand to decide the second place.

In the final - five minutes into the game the U-MSC striker was tripped and a penalty was accorded.  There was no problem converting it.  Leading by three to nothing late in the second half, U-MSC knew they had the championship in hand.  There were some remarkable saves from both sides.

UMSC GU7 All Star Team Wins Albert Campbell Tournament!  At the tournament on September 19th and 20th the team won in overtime in the final game. Congratulations!

The Unionville Strikers Girls U7 All-Star team, coached by Bill Markos, participated in the Albert Campbell Tournament in Scarborough on September 19 and 20, and were crowned champions. In the first game of the tournament, the Strikers defeated the Kleinburg Lions 3 – 1 with goals scored by Zanyece Harris-Wright and two goals by Callie Wright.

The next opponent was the Mississauga Falcons which Unionville defeated 2 – 1 with goals from Alyson Shim and Callie Wright. In the third game of the round robin against the Ajax Wildcats, Unionville lost 1 – 0. However, the game meant nothing since Unionville had already secured a spot in the finals. Congratulations to Zanyece Harris-Wright, Alexandra Markos, Evelyn Attard, Karina Moffat, Emily Sunn, Callie Wright, Jade Deluca-Ahooja, Alyssa Coquia, Megan Cuscianna, Aranee Balendra, McKenna Gemmell, Alyson Shim, Melissa Reardon, Yamine Hamze, and Yasmina Warwar on a job well done. UMSC GU16 All Star Team Wins Albert Campbell Tournament!

The tournament was held on September 19 and 20th. Congratulations!

The tournament was intense right down to the last minute. See picture on Home Page

The Girls U16 Select team performed equally as well, winning the tournament with a golden goal. The girls started off their day by defeating the U15 Scarborough team 1-0, with a goal scored by Megan Nishida. In the next round robin game, the girls tied the U16 Scarborough team 1-1, with a goal scored by Harleen Nijjar. Finally, the girls ended off by facing Brams United and defeating them 2-1, with goals scored by Samantha Yang and Kristin Dass.

This was enough to put the Strikers in first place in their group as they went on to face West Rouge in the semi-finals the next day. The girls won 2-0 with both goals scored by Tiffany Chow. Now the Strikers were headed off to the finals, with their previous opponents, the U16 Scarborough team awaiting them. Following a formal entrance, both teams were ready to go.

The Strikers played an intense “nail-biting” game. After keeping it 0-0 for both halves, they went on to sudden death overtime.  When the first overtime half ended, it was still 0-0. As overtime was closing to its end, the strikers were awarded a free kick just past the half line. With the kick taken by Sarah Sin-Chan, it fell to the top of the penalty box, where Megan Nishida was able to lob the ball over the goalie’s out-stretched arms and into the net, making it the GOLDEN GOAL.

This tournament win would not have been possible without our defenders, also known as the “Great Wall of China,” composed of Wessal “ohmygod” Omarkhail, Celine Yu, Melanie Ng, Nicole Chan, and Sarah Sin-Chan. Our midfielders, who were the play-makers of the field included Megan Nishida, Farah Jamal, Tiffany Chow, Marissa Chin, Lauren Mah, and Kristin Dass. They set up the forwards for the finish. These speedy players were Shanelle Dudart, Harleen Nijjar, Katie Shim, Michelle Tang, and Samantha Yang. Although the forwards are looked up upon, we cannot forget the amazing goalkeepers which included Sarah Sin-Chan and Nicole Chan. They both made the net seem impenetrable with their saves. Behind every good team, there is an even better coaching and managing staff. Coaches Glenn Nishida and Alfie Ng brought the technical aspect of the game, and managers Trish Chan and Dianne Walcott organized everything, and kept all players and parents on the same page.

UMSC U14 GIRLS ALL STAR TEAM

FINALISTS AT THE 2009 UMSC ALL STAR/SELECT TOURNAMENT

AUGUST 21-23, 2009

Congratulations to the Girls U14 All Star team for their stellar performance at the UMSC All Star/Select Tournament in August.  The girls won every game in their round robin, in part due to the goals by Heather Joannou, Lauren Jeffs, Rahna Dad Mohammad, Jade Dopson, Natalie Yeung, Lorraine Yeung and Anisa Jamal.  They shut out their opponents 3-0 in the semi finals due to the great goal keeping of Jen Grott. The Final Cup game against North Toronto Nitros was hard fought by all team members including Victoria Garavellos, Jaclyn Ho, Kiana Hylton, Christina Lefas, Jenny Martineau, Vanessa Lum, Chantel Altomare-Ciallella, Erin Garavellos, Jodi Leung and Samantha Fung.  Unfortunately, a penalty kick by the talented Nitros, made the final score 1-0 for them.  The team is very proud of how far they have come thanks to amazing coaching by Tom Kardaras and Yusuaf Omarkhail and the managerial skills of Janet Selby.  In the John Traganitis All Star Tournament in Aurora, Sept 19/20th they made it to the semi finals on a goal by Ali Puopolo.  They played their hearts out against Newmarket, however after two overtime periods, it went into penalty kicks and Newmarket out shot them.  But it has been a great year and we wish to also thank our call up players, Laura McGuire, Stephanie Kardaras and Melissa Kocuba for their help along the way.

UMSC BU13 team wins Lake Simcoe All Star Tournament!

Congratulations to the BU13 All Star team! The Lake Simcoe Tournament on July 25/26 was close to the finish - the UMSC team persevered to win.

See the full story below

Under the guidance of coaches Renaud Ip and Shayne Van Heer, the Lake Simcoe tournament held on July 25th and 26th turned out to be a fitting experience for the BU13 All Star team.

The first game against the Peterborough Pain ended in a 0 - 0 tie, with the second game against Dixie postponed due to inclement weather.  The third game against Burford was an important one, with Burford having lost to Dixie 4-0 the previous day.  Realizing the urgency of the situation, a different strategy was employed with the most ready players attacking, resulting in a 2 – 1 win after Burford  had tied the game in the dying minutes.  That win was the turning point in the BU13 quest for the Championship trophy.

Dixie defeated Peterborough 2-0, leaving Dixie at the top of the group with six points, and UMSC second with four.  Since there was no chance of a change in teams for the final, the second postponed game was cancelled and the final scheduled for 4:45 p.m.  Playing the final looked to be in doubt with rain and lightning until well after 5 p.m. and some earlier games cancelled; if the BU13 Final had been cancelled, Dixie would have automatically been named the winner on points; luckily, the skies cleared and this was not the case.

Going into the final, the UMSC BU13 All Stars were hungry and ready to win, playing with confidence and precision, sending long balls deep into the opposition half that required extensive runs back to defend.  At half time the game was scoreless.  A few minutes into the second half, Dixie managed to put one behind the UMSC team and were leading 1-0.  A game of catch up ensued, with long passes putting pressure on the opposition coupled with fine defensive work.  With minutes to spare, the UMSC team managed to tie the game 1-1; the last few minutes of the game were precarious but the tie was preserved, sending the game to penalties.

The penalties to decide the winner was a nerve racking situation.  The keepers on both teams saved one shot each, however the deciding factor was two complete misses by Dixie, coupled with only one for UMSC and everyone else scoring, handing the Championship to UMSC.  The players did earn the Championship.

UMSC U14 Boys All Star Team wins Oshawa All Star Tournament

Congratulations to the UMSC BU14 All Star team on winning the Oshawa All Star Tournament on August 9th.

They defeated Darlington in the final 4 to 2.

The UMSC BU14 team traveled to Oshawa on the weekend of Aug 9 to compete against 5 other teams. We won the tournament with 2 wins and a tie, defeating Darlington in the finals on Sunday. Our first game was against Darlington at Lake Vista Park. The boys played a solid game defeating Darlington 4 to 2. Goals were scored by Patrick Leung (2), Jonathan Depaola and Christian Clancy. Our second game at Lakeview Park was the most challenging, against a strong rival team from Aurora. Our team stayed focused, played hard and ended up tying the game 1 all. Jonathan Depaola scored for UMSC. The last game on Saturday was against Pickering BU13 team. We defeated them 5 to 1 with goals scored by Jonathan Depaola (3), Kevin Guitierrez and John Scarrow. On Sunday we met up with Darlington again in the finals after a 45 minute rain delay. After a quick goal in the first minute of the game, both teams scored to tie the game 2 all by the end of the first half. In the second half, UMSC played a very strong defense, pushed the ball up to the strikers and scored 3 more goals for a decisive win of 5 to 2. The scorers were Jonathan Depaola (4) and Patrick Leung. The sportsmanship awards were given to Anthony Santos, Ali Tejani and Matthew Samuels. The boys passed well, did not give up or relax and represented the club in a sportsmanlike manner. Great job guys!

UMSC U10 Girls All Star Team finalists at Oshawa All Star Tournament

Congratulations to the UMSC GU10 All Star team for reaching the finals at  the Oshawa All Star Tournament on August 9th.

Over the Aug 8-9 week end, the Unionville Milliken Soccer Club (UMSC) Girls Under 10 All Star team advanced to the Oshawa NASC Soccer All Star Tournament Final versus the Oshawa GU10 home team . This was due to excellent efforts from all players and support from their parents. Actually, UMSC came so close to winning the tournament as they were leading 1-0 at one point in the Final. That's the only goal the Oshawa GU10 team gave up in the entire tournament. After regulation time, both teams were still tied at 1-1. Then, at the last minute of the 2nd half of the overtime period, Oshawa scored the golden goal to make it 2-1.

What a Season for the UMSC U16 Boys All Star Strikers

The UMSC boys under 16 All-Star team win their 5th tournament in a row. After three years together these boys have put in a lot of hard work and dedication into being part of the team. They have combined skills with personality not to be only teammates but also great friends off the field. The team was asked to participate in the York Regional Soccer League this past summer and pulled through with a record of 9 wins and 0 losses. Also this summer they competed in 5 All-Star/Select tournaments. Winning the previous 4 tournaments in Lake Simcoe, Oshawa, Unionville, and North Mississauga the team participated in their last tournament of the year in Scarborough for the Albert Campbell tournament held on September 20 and 21. The boys once again stepped up against tough competition in the finals vs. Clairlea-Westview. The team took the game 2-0 with solid playing and great communication on the field to bring home the 5th consecutive championship trophy of the year. This by far was their most successful year to date, they posted some very impressive wins throughout the season and under the leadership of team captain and leading goal scorer Bobby Kardaras were able to maintain an undefeated record in YRSL and all 5 tournaments. This was truly a remarkable season and a great accomplishment. The team was coached by Philip Kardaras and Pat Gismondi. Team members include forwards Bobby Kardaras, Michael Gismondi, and Dakota Henderson, mid-fielders Jonathan Suckling-Alderton, Ryan Ng, Josh Lowe, Rajakeirthan Arunthavaraph, Willie Scarrow, Andrew Tang, and Ryan D’Arcy Singleton, defensemen Tarun Bablani, Paris Blackwood, Darien Pun, Justin Denanauth, Sinthuran Yogaratnam, and goaltender Michael Muzzatti.

The coaches and players would like to thank the parents and the Unionville Milliken Soccer Club for their continuous support for the past 3 years.

U-MSC All Star Girls U-14 bring home Championship at Lake Simcoe Tournament

Congratulation to U-MSC GU-14 team for winning the Lake Simcoe Tournament!

The girls won their qualifying round by 2-0, 2-0, 1-0 and finally winning their final championship game by 5-0. The girls played an amazing game shutting out the tournament. “Watching the girls play in this tournament was like listening to a beautiful piece of music, they were all in synch”, said the coaching staff Alfie Ng and Philip Chow; or as the girls would say, “Listening to the Jonas Brothers sing”.

You cannot go through a tournament by not giving up one goal without a solid defense. Our defense was a force to be reckoned with. The defensive team of Kristin Dass, Melanie Ng, Celine Yu and Wessal Omarkhail were like the “Great Wall of China”. Whenever the ball hit, it bounced back. When the frustrated opponent finally struck hard enough and punched a hole through the Great Wall of China, our impenetrable Goal Keeper was there to say “No Way, Jose”!, and stopped every shot directed at the net. A very special “thank you” goes to Nicole Tortorici, Esin Uner and Tiffany Chow for “volunteering” to play goalie, and for performing flawlessly as the last line of defense. Our goal keepers had only one goal and that was to deny the opponent of theirs and denied them they did.

People say Soccer is a beautiful sport, and this beauty is exemplified by our “Play Makers”, the Mid-fielders; Vanessa Barnwell, Lidia Tortorici, Nicole Tortorici, Nicole Samara, Lauren Mah and Tiffany Chow. They were there to support the defense, and set up the Forward for the final finish.

You cannot loose a game if you don’t let in a goal, and you cannot win unless you get a goal. When it came to making it count, the speed of Marissa Chin and Alex Lowe, the powerful kick of Harleen Nijjar, the accuracy of our “lefty” Mary Kathleen Spray and Esin Uner played the finale notes to a beautiful song by putting that ball into the net, scoring a total of 10 goals in the tournament.

UMSC GU18 All Star Wins Greece All Star Tournament

CONGRATULATIONS to the UMSC girls' team under 18 for winning the Greece All Star tournament. The only Canadian team in the group, the tournament was held in Greece N.Y.  The UMSC GU18 strikers were successful in placing first among a group of 6 teams.  This was the result of dedication and commitment from the players.

UMSC BU14 All Star wins Albert Campbell All-Star Tournament

The Albert Campbell Tournament was played on the weekend of September 16 & 17 throughout various soccer fields in Scarborough.

The coaching staff; Philip Kardaras, Pat Gismondi and Andy Fuentes, would like to congratulate and thank all the players: Michael Muzzatti, Joshua Lowe, Darien Pun, Terrance Yiu, Kent Leslie, Rajakeirthan Arunthavaraph, Michael Gismondi, Robert
Kardaras, Ryan Singleton D’arcy, Jonathan Suckling, Willy Scarrow, Alan Ang, Kenny Fuentes, Sinthuran Yogaratnam, Andrew Sulaiman and Ryan Ng on winning the Albert Campbell Tournament.

The UMSC All Star Strikers played 3 games on Saturday starting with the Clairlea-
Westview, a team we had played in the Unionville tournament that ended in a 1-0 win for the Strikers. This time the game ended in a 0-0 tie after a tight and well-played game by both squads. The second match was against Darlington who played a good game but the UMSC Strikers out played their opponent by using great teamwork and good passes. The scoring started with a nicely placed ball by Joshua Lowe followed with one by Bobby Kardaras, they both went on to score another goal each. Terrance Yiu and Ryan Singleton each added to the tally. The team went on to win this game by a score of 6-1.

After a long day we started our 3
rd and last game against CCH - Colborne. We knew that we needed a win to play in the finals on Sunday so the players went on the field with determination. Shortly after the game started the Strikers was up 2-0. With good passes and un-selfish playing by our team we went on to take the game 9-0. What was surprising about this game was not the fact that UMSC won by such a large margin, but the fact that at no time during the game was there any attempt by the other team to play unfair or to voluntarily foul the players. It was a very clean and well refereed game. The referee approached both benches requesting to end this game with 10 minutes left, seeing that where was no need to continue after such a big lead, but the players on both sides wanted to play on, and so it did, after we switched some players on both sides, they continued until the final whistle by the referee. In the words of the referee to both coaching benches "I have never had so much fun refereeing a game as I just did in these last 10 minutes. I want to congratulate both teams for having such great kids, for playing such a clean game and having so much fun." The coaching staff and the players of the UMSC All Star team take off our hats to the team of CCH - Colborne.

Our win put us through to the finals on Sunday against Clairlea-Westview. The All Star Strikers knew we had a good chance to win this game but would have to play a solid game with good passes. Our team came out firing on all cylinders and created a few chances to score but they had excellent goaltending. The Clairlea team took over the match halfway through the 1
st period and had their chances cut short by our defense. It was an exchange of excellent passes and shots on goal but the 1st half ended in a 0-0 tie. The 2nd half was no different that the first, full of good shots and close calls by both teams. With 10 minutes left to go and looking at overtime, Alan Ang came down the right wing and crossed to the middle where, Bobby Kardaras, deflected the ball with his head to the back post away from the goalie and scored our 1st goal of the game.
The Clairlea team came on strong knowing they had to tie to extend the game or settle for second. Our defense and mid-field took over and kept the opponent at bay. The game ended with a 1-0 win for the UMSC BU14 All Star Strikers and our first tournament win after being finalist in the previous two tournaments.

Once again, our thanks go out to all the parents for being there and supporting both the coaches and the players all season. Our thanks to Philip Chow for getting us registered in all these tournaments this year as well as to Doug and Henry for getting our passports and other paperwork registered and back to us in time so that our kids would be able to play.

BU-14 All Star Team Sub-Champion in Oshawa NASC All-Star/Select Invitational Tournament held on the weekend of August 12th & 13th.

Before we get started, we the coaching staff of the Unionville Strikers BU-14 All Star Team would like to thank each and every player and their parents for their great effort and support in last weekend’s nail biting, nerve-racking Oshawa NASC soccer tournament. The boys were all very nervous as we met the evening before their very first tournament. They only had three weeks to prepare for this weekend and felt that they were not ready. We assured them that we had a great deal of talent on our team and our road to winning would be to play our game and not get caught playing the other teams game.

Saturday morning with nerves on end and with only two subs, we started the first game against a well-prepared and undefeated Oshawa BU-14 team. Our team struck first and Ryan Singleton scored our first goal of the tournament.  The Oshawa team came on strong and in the dying minutes of the game. They took a shot that was heading straight for the upper corner of the goal, an unstoppable shot, when out of nowhere the hand of our goalie, Michael Muzzatti, deflected the ball wide of the goal preserving a 1-0 win in our first game and earning him the Most Sportsman Medal from the other team coaching staff.

The players were pumped up for our second game that afternoon against the Tweed Titans.  It was a nervous start for both teams but our boys settled in and playing their game, were able to score 5 times while keeping our goal undefeated.  The goals were scored by Robert Kardaras (Bobby) – 2 goals , Jonathan Suckling - 1 goal, Rajakeirthan Arunthavaraph - 1 goal and Terrance Yiu - 1 goal.  Joshua Lowe played an excellent game earning him the Most Sportsman Medal.

With 2 wins, 6 points, 6 goals in favour and 0 against we were in first place and waiting for the winner of the wildcard game later that afternoon to see which team we would be playing Sunday morning.

Our Sunday game was against the Oshawa BU-13 team, the score was 1-0 in our favour after the 1st half. We went on to win this game 3-0. The goals were scored by Michael Gismondi, Ryan Singleton and Bobby Kardaras.  The Most Sportsman Medal was awarded to Rajakeirthan Arunthavaraph.

This win, gave our Strikers a birth in the finals against the Oshawa BU-14 team whom we had faced on Saturday morning, we all knew it was going to be a tuff game.

Unionville struck first once again with the goal being scored by Raj and we were up 1-0 by the end of the first half.  The Oshawa team kept pushing and finally was able to score the equalizer in the second half, five minutes later on a failed attempt by our team to reject the ball from a corner kick the Oshawa team scored again putting them up 2-1. The boys were devastated but we, the coaches, knew the talent we had on this team and encouraged them to not give up and this was their game. Regrouping, they went right back at their opponent and in the last 5 minutes of the game Andrew Sulaiman, hungry for a goal, scored off a cornerkick, which tied the game, sending it into overtime. We should mention that once again our goalie, Michael, came through in the second half saving his goal from defeat in 3 or 4 opportunities, which earned him the Most Sportsman Medal again from the Oshawa team.

At the end of two 5-minute overtime periods the game was still tied 2-2.  The game came down to 5 penalty shots per team, after which we were still tied with both teams having scored 3 goals a piece.  It was now sudden death penalty shots. It took 10 players from each team before the game was decided by the winning goal from the Oshawa BU-14 team.

All this time, the parents and spectators on the sideline were cheering on both teams and groaning on every fail goal attempt, everyone was nervous.

It was a gut wrenching loss and the boys were depressed. We told them that they were winners and they should hold their heads up high for they were the only team to give the Oshawa team a loss this year, and our team was the only undefeated team in the tournament.

The coaching staff made sure the players were aware of this and how proud we were of all of them, we had won this tournament no matter what the outcome was after the penalty shots.

Upon awarding the trophies, the Oshawa NASC officials commended both teams for the excellent playing. “It was the longest, most exciting and nerve racking game that has ever been played in the history of our tournament.”

On a very sportsman note on behalf of the BU-14 UMSC Strikers they parted with a “See you in Unionville”.

The coaching staff, Philip Kardaras, Pat Gismondi and Andy Fuentes, would like to thank all the players:

Andrew Sulaiman, Kenny Fuentes, Alan Ang, Kent Leslie , Darien Pun, Joshua Lowe, Ryan Singleton, Jonathan Suckling, Robert Kardaras, Michael Gismondi, Rajakeirthan Arunthavaraph, Terrance Yiu and goaltender Michael Muzzatti.

For their time and dedication to their team mates and their efforts to improve their skills at the game.

We would also like to thank all the parents once again for their continuous support by getting their children to practices and games on time.

We would also like to thank Philip Chow, who without his expertise and patience to get our paperwork in order with the region, made it possible for the team to participate in this tournament.

All the players on this team are truly ALL-STARS.
